1-Way Switching
1-way switching is the simplest switch arrangement — one switch controls one light from one location. It's what most domestic lights use.
Wiring Diagram
How It Works
- Supply enters the ceiling rose at the loop-in terminal (L, N, E).
- A switch cable drops from the rose to the switch. The brown core is "switch live" — it carries live all the way to the switch.
- The return core (the one that was blue, now sleeved brown) carries live back only when the switch is closed.
- The pendant gets L from the switch return and N from the neutral plate.
The Switch Cable
In the switch cable:
- Brown core → switch terminal COM
- Blue core (sleeved brown) → switch terminal L1 — this must be sleeved because it is live when the switch is on
There is no neutral at the switch in 1-way switching. Smart switches that require a neutral cannot replace a standard 1-gang switch on this wiring.
