1-Way Switching

1-way switching is the simplest switch arrangement — one switch controls one light from one location. It's what most domestic lights use.

How It Works

  1. Supply enters the ceiling rose at the loop-in terminal (L, N, E).
  2. A switch cable drops from the rose to the switch. The brown core is "switch live" — it carries live all the way to the switch.
  3. The return core (the one that was blue, now sleeved brown) carries live back only when the switch is closed.
  4. The pendant gets L from the switch return and N from the neutral plate.

The Switch Cable

In the switch cable:

  • Brown core → switch terminal COM
  • Blue core (sleeved brown) → switch terminal L1 — this must be sleeved because it is live when the switch is on

There is no neutral at the switch in 1-way switching. Smart switches that require a neutral cannot replace a standard 1-gang switch on this wiring.
