Practice
Guided wiring puzzles. Work through them in order — each builds on the last.
Through-joint: 3-terminal junction box
Wire both ends of a junction box through-joint and understand why live (line) connects to live, neutral to neutral, and earth (CPC) to earth.
Inside an old 2-plate ceiling rose
Wire a 2-plate ceiling rose — the older arrangement you'll still find in many UK homes, with loop-in, switch wire, and pendant connections.
Inside a modern 3-plate ceiling rose
Wire the modern loop-in ceiling rose. Four cables: loop-in mains, loop-out mains, switch wire, and pendant — all sharing the same terminal blocks inside the rose.
Junction box wiring method (4-terminal)
Wire a 4-terminal junction box used in the junction box lighting method — an alternative to the ceiling rose loop-in, common in loft spaces.
2-way switching: wiring the strapper cable
Understand 2-way switching — where two switches control one light. Wire the 3-core strapper cable between the two 2-way switches.
These lessons are for learning, not for certifying work. In England, replacing an accessory like a ceiling rose is non-notifiable, but new circuits and consumer unit work fall under Part P and must be done or signed off by a competent person. BS 7671 is the authoritative source — always.
