Inside a 3-Plate Ceiling Rose

A modern 3-plate ceiling rose has three groups of terminals. Understanding what connects where is essential before opening one.

Connections in Detail

Loop-in plate (blue terminals, usually):

  • Brown (L) from supply cable
  • Brown (L) from loop-out cable (to next rose)
  • Blue (N) from supply cable
  • Blue (N) from loop-out cable
  • Earth from supply cable, Earth from loop-out

Switch plate (centre terminals):

  • Brown from switch cable (switch live — connected to loop-in L)
  • Blue, sleeved brown, from switch cable (switch return — carries live when switch is on)

Pendant plate (chord grip terminals):

  • Brown from pendant flex (receives live when switch is on)
  • Blue from pendant flex (connected to N on loop-in plate)

Common Mistakes

  1. Connecting switch return to loop-in neutral — the neutral at loop-in is always live reference; you'd never get isolation
  2. Not sleeving the switch return — a bare blue conductor next to live terminals is dangerous
  3. Mixing supply and loop-out at different terminals — the loop-in plate should hold both
