Outdoor Sockets
Outdoor socket work is notifiable under Part P — it's a special location regardless of the circuit type. Even replacing a like-for-like outdoor socket requires compliance with additional rules.
IP Ratings
Outdoor sockets must be rated for their environment. IP (Ingress Protection) codes define dust and water resistance:
RCD Protection
All outdoor circuits must be protected by a 30mA RCD. This is non-negotiable — outdoor sockets are in a zone where the risk of electric shock is high.
If your outdoor circuit is part of an existing radial or ring, you should check that the circuit is RCD-protected at the consumer unit. If not, fit an RCBO for that circuit.
Cable Routing
- Cable outdoors must be in steel conduit or be armoured (SWA cable)
- Cables buried underground must be armoured or in rigid conduit at depth (450mm under a garden, 600mm under a driveway)
- Entry points must be sealed against water ingress
Garden Socket Rules
A garden socket on a 13A ring must still follow all ring final rules. Using a 20A radial for a dedicated garden circuit is increasingly common — it avoids adding load to the house ring.
Part P reminder: All outdoor work is notifiable. Always use a registered electrician or notify building control before starting.
